EIS people set to provide key support at Beijing 2022
With the start of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games now imminent and the Paralympic Games following soon after, a number of English Institute of Sport (EIS) people are in China and as part of the support teams for Team GB and ParalympicsGB.
Beijing will be the tenth consecutive Games that EIS staff have supported, with around 15 practitioners heading to the Chinese capital over the next two months.
These performance service members will work alongside the sports’ own performance staff and practitioners from the other Home Country Sports Institutes to provide world class support to enable British athletes to excel at the Games.
Team GB Chef de Mission for Beijing 2022, Georgina Harland, said: “We firmly believe that we have one of the best prepared teams in Beijing and that is in no small part due to the performance staff we have supporting the athletes.
“We are very grateful for the support of the Home Country Sports Institutes for providing medical and physio assistance to help ensure the athletes get to the start line in the best possible shape and are supported throughout the Games.”
Among the areas EIS people will be supporting are strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, psychology, mental health, nutrition and athlete health. At the Paralympic Games, EIS staff will also provide support to the ParalympicsGB HQ team in Beijing.
EIS Director of Performance Support and Science Dr Kevin Currell said: “We are exceptionally proud to provide outstanding support that enables sports and athletes to excel and the Olympic and Paralympic Games often marks the culmination of our teams’ hard work.
“The opportunity to travel with Team GB or ParalympicsGB and continue to provide that support on the ground at Games time is a real honour and I hope that all of the EIS people at Beijing 2022 thoroughly enjoy the experience. I’d also like to acknowledge the tireless support of all of those who remain back in the UK, we will all be eagerly watching the Games and cheering on the GB teams.”
Following on from the 2008 summer Olympics, the Chinese capital will welcome the winter sporting world in 2022 with the Opening Ceremony set for the 4 February. The Games will last 16 days with the Closing Ceremony on 20 February.
In total, 109 events in seven winter sports will be held in the three competition zones of central Beijing, Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.
