EIS appoint Paulson Head of Paralympic Performance Support
The English Institute of Sport (EIS) has announced the appointment of Dr Tom Paulson as its new Head of Paralympic Performance Support.
Paulson, who will lead the EIS provision of Para Sport Science and Sport Medicine services, is currently an EIS Senior Performance Pathway Scientist responsible for the creation and delivery of the ‘Para Transitions Programme’ in collaboration with discipline experts from within the institute and the British Paralympic Association (BPA).
He began his career supporting a range of high performance sports at Loughborough University during his MSc studies before completing a PhD with the Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport (PHC), investigating the prescription of exercise for health and performance in individuals with a spinal cord injury.
In the Rio cycle he also delivered applied performance support to GB Wheelchair Rugby, leading the development and implementation of impairment-specific travel and recovery strategies and sport-specific performance testing batteries.
The EIS, who supported 93% of Paralympic GB medallists at Rio 2016, provides sport science and medicine service to 16 Paralympic sports.
Dr Paulson said: “Over the last two cycles the EIS has become renowned for the delivery of World class Sport Science and Sport Medicine support to Para athletes and coaches.
“It is an honour to have the opportunity to harness the institute’s collective expertise and work collaboratively with NGBs and the BPA to drive continued Paralympic and international success through world-leading research, innovation and practitioner development activity.’
EIS Director of Science and Technical Development Dr Kevin Currell said: “Tom will be a great addition to the EIS Science team. He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise from Paralympic sports which I am sure he will be able to use as he takes up the role.”
Dr Paulson will take up his new post on 1st August.
