EIS duo part of Three Lions’ backroom staff in Russia

EIS | 06 July 2018

Two staff members from the English Institute of Sport are playing integral roles in Gareth Southgate’s backroom team, supporting the England squad at the FIFA World Cup.

All eyes are now on Wednesday’s semi-final clash with Croatia as the country’s men’s team prepare for their first last-four clash since 1990.

Simon Spencer, EIS Head of Physiotherapy, and Mike Naylor, EIS Head of Performance Nutrition, have both been with the squad since they met for their warm-up games in England.

Spencer is the England Senior Team Physiotherapist and has also been with the EIS since 2010. His background includes roles in professional football with West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City.

Naylor combines his EIS role with his duties as a Consultant for The FA. He has extensive experience having led nutrition support for Team GB at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 and has supported athletes since joining the EIS as an intern in 2007.

Kevin Currell, EIS Director of Science and Technical Development, said: “We’re proud to have two of our valued heads of service using their experience and knowledge to the benefit of the men’s senior football team.

“It again shows the quality of our staff at the EIS and how they’re in demand to play their part in supporting some of the country’s best sports men and women.”
