EIS weekly roundup: Conference appearances, roadshows, international debuts and grand openings

Lucy Lomax | 23 November 2018

It’s been another busy few week at the EIS with three members of staff guest speaking at conferences, the last of the female athlete workshops, members of the Performance Pathways team running ‘Inductions and Exits’ roadshows, the Elite Athlete Centre and Hotel opening at Loughborough University and a practitioner making her debut for her country!

Looking back to earlier in the month, Kevin Currell, EIS Director of Science and Technical Development spoke on a Q&A panel at the UKAD Annual Clean Sport Forum around governance in sport, with specific focus on anti-doping.

Kevin spoke about what the EIS do to ensure minimum standards in science and medicine, how technical leadership roles need to guarantee quality assurance and how the EIS supports anti-doping efforts such as UKAD training.

On Wednesday (21 November), the final Female Athlete Health workshop saw practitioners and people within the high performance system learn about how to maximise the potential of female athletes and understand how the menstrual cycle affects performance. A great series of roadshows so well done to all on the Female Athlete Health team!

Our Head of Performance Support for GB Boxing, Ian Gatt, flew the EIS flag at the Therapy Expo in Birmingham on Wednesday (21 November), presenting about hand and wrist injury management.

The new Elite Athlete Centre and Hotel at Loughborough University was officially opened on Friday 9th November with the facility having a specialist nutrition room to meet athletes’ individual dietary requirements. The menus were developed in conjunction with EIS Performance Nutritionist James Moran.

James said: “The advantage of the Elite Athlete Centre and Hotel means that as well as having outstanding facilities, we’re able to collaborate with partners to offer world class nutritional support and positively influence athletes’ diet.

“The menu and nutritional philosophy we’ve designed specifically meets the bespoke needs of the elite athletes the EIS works with. This ensures the right combination of taste, presentation and nutritional value.” To read more about the facility, please click here.

The EIS Performance Pathways team concluded their ‘High-Performance Inductions and Exits’ roadshow this week. The workshops, led by Performance Pathway Scientists Elliott Newell and Andy Burns, were created to meet emerging requests following on from the successful ‘World Class Transitions’ symposium in the summer. Feedback from current and previous athletes and staff indicated that the entrance on to and exits out of World Class Programmes can be a challenging time, so the team set out to address the emerging concerns.

EIS Director of Athlete Health Craig Ranson spoke at a Leaders in Performance conference where he talked about athlete wellbeing and mental health, touching on the work the EIS and UKS are doing in the High Performance System.

Finally, EIS Performance Nutritionist Lauren Delany who works with British Cycling earned her first Test cap for Ireland Women’s rugby against the USA on Sunday 18th November. Lauren is also starting at fullback this weekend against England. All at the EIS send their congratulations to Lauren on a wonderful achievement!
