Nottinghamshire Police and the UKSI Collaborate to Support Athlete Career Transitions

24 October 2024

An inspiring conversation between a Paralympic athlete who believed a career in policing would not be possible for them, and an Inspector from Nottinghamshire Police, has led to an exciting opportunity.

The chance encounter has seen Nottinghamshire Police and the UK Sports Institute (UKSI) joining forces to promote a range of career opportunities for Paralympic and Olympic athletes. This collaboration, supported by the UKSI’s Performance Lifestyle team, aims to help athletes explore post-sport career paths while still on the World Class Programme (WCP) or after transitioning from it.

What opportunities are available for athletes?

Nottinghamshire Police is currently offering full-time opportunities within their control room, which may be particularly suited to athletes who are preparing to leave their WCP. However, the invitation is open to all athletes who are curious about a potential career in policing, regardless of where they are in their sporting career. By sparking interest early on, we hope to help athletes shape their professional and educational goals while still competing, ultimately preparing them for a smooth transition into the workforce when the time is right.

What can athletes expect from the upcoming Nottinghamshire Police Careers Webinar?

The webinar, taking place on Tuesday 19 November, will offer athletes an inside look at what it’s like to work for Nottinghamshire Police. The session will cover roles available in the control room, showcasing the wide range of support and opportunities available. There will be two sessions available to join via Microsoft Teams, running from 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 6pm, ensuring flexibility for athletes’ schedules.

Why are Paralympic and Olympic athletes a great fit for careers in policing?

Athletes bring valuable transferable skills such as discipline, resilience, teamwork, and the ability to perform under pressure. These attributes align closely with the demands of policing roles, especially in high-stakes environments like the control room. Their unique experiences can make significant contributions to the policing community, and this webinar is a great opportunity to explore how those skills can translate into a rewarding career.

How can athletes sign up for the webinar?

If you are or have been on a World Class Programme and are interested in attending the webinar on Tuesday 19 November, let your Performance Lifestyle practitioner know, or email the UKSI Performance Lifestyle Futures team at PL.Futures@uksportsinstitute.co.uk to receive joining information.
