Wheelchair Fencing: World Cup gold for Gilliver

Piers Gilliver rounded off a successful 2018 with gold in the Category A individual epee at the wheelchair fencing World Cup in Kyoto.

He overcame Italy’s Emanuele Lambertini in the final to finish the year on a high after winning golds at the World Cups in Pisa, Warsaw and Tblisi as well as collecting silver at the European Championships in Terni, in September.

Gilliver also finished eighth in the Category A sabre. His team mate Dimitri Coutya won two bronze medals in the epee category B and foil category B.

The men’s foil team finished sixth in what was a new event for the British athletes.

Results from the World Cup contribute towards the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic qualification process.

Gilliver and Coutya train under the watchful eye of their coach, Peter Rome, of the EIS at the Sport Training Village at the University of Bath. The EIS is responsible for the management of the Wheelchair Fencing World Class Programme.
