Predicting future medallists: British Canoeing and EIS Performance Data
Is it really possible to predict future medallists at major championships? We spoke to Mike Mustoe, EIS Performance Analyst working with British Canoeing, to find out how the introduction of an Elo rating system helped Canoe Sprint understand strength of field and predict performance trajectories.
Canoe Sprint is one of two canoeing disciplines included in the Summer Olympic Games (the other being Canoe Slalom), and British Canoeing receives support from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) to help it excel at the very top level of the sport.
Here, Mustoe explains the impact of the EIS Performance Data team, in helping understand how quickly athletes might move up the rankings in certain events depending on field depth, and enabling an objective look at how an athlete is tracking for performance at future Games.
